The Soundtrack to A Foolish Consistency

Music is hugely powerful. A single song has the potential to turn your mood upside down, bringing you from a state of pure joy to one of abject sadness — and vice versa — in a matter of moments or a few notes.

Music transports us from wherever we are at the present moment to some distant place and time frozen in our memories. Whether it’s the tune that catches us, or lyrics that resonate somewhere in the depths of our souls, music provides a language through which we can speak to ourselves.

Not surprisingly, music figures prominently in A Foolish Consistency. So we put together a book soundtrack featuring songs that are mentioned, as well as others that just seem to fit the storyline, the relationships and the emotional roller coaster.

1. At Last by Etta James — Callie’s favorite song. And who wouldn’t melt like warm butter at the sound of Etta’s soulful voice and lyrics like “At last my love has come along/My lonely days are over/And life is like a song”?

2. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin — Will’s favorite song.

3. Open Arms by Journey — love lost and reclaimed. The story in a nutshell.

4. Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye — need I say more?

5. Brick House by The Commodores — Callie and Miranda’s theme song.

6. For My Lady by The Moody Blues — like a Renaissance poem, courtly and chivalric.

7. Our Love Is Here to Stay by Dinah Washington — the opening song performed by the quartet at Bell Mansion. And, at that moment, an apt line.

8. Missing You by John Waite and Allison Krause — love lost, reclaimed, and lost again.

9. Until the Night by Billy Joel — “I have been waiting so long …” (And the saxophone wails.)

10. Everything I Do (I Do for You) by Bryan Adams — “Search your heart, search your soul/And when you find me there you’ll search no more …/…Don’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for./You can’t tell me, it’s not worth dyin’ for.”

11. The Flame by Cheap Trick — The anguish of love lost.
